Arriving in Chennai marks the commencement of our thrilling South India Motorbike Expedition along the Indian Spice Route. For a seamless transition into this adventure, it’s crucial that flights land at Chennai International Airport before 10 am. From here, around a 2-hour road journey unfolds, leading us to the beautiful coastal town of Mahabalipuram.

Upon checking into our hotel in Mahabalipuram, we will take the opportunity to refresh and then gather for lunch, a perfect time to bond with fellow adventurers. Mahabalipuram, known for its rich history and stunning architecture, offers a plethora of sights to explore. Post-lunch, our expedition takes a cultural dive as we set out to explore the ancient temples that dot this UNESCO World Heritage site. These architectural marvels, steeped in history, provide a glimpse into the artistic and spiritual legacy of the region.

As the day Sun down, we will convene for an expedition briefing. This session is designed to familiarize participants with the journey ahead, covering essential details and safety protocols. The briefing also serves as an open forum for questions and discussions, setting the stage for the incredible experiences that await us on this motorbike expedition through the heart of South India’s spice route.

Start on a picturesque road journey spanning 116 km from Mahabalipuram to Pondicherry, with a special detour through the tranquil Auroville. Our day begins post-breakfast, setting out towards the serene landscapes that lie ahead. Auroville, a universal town where people from across the globe live in harmony, is our first stop. Here, we’ll visit the iconic Matrimandir, a symbol of universal harmony, offering a moment of peace and introspection amidst its golden dome.

As we proceed to Pondicherry, our anticipation builds for the coastal charm that awaits. Upon arrival, we’ll settle into a beach resort, promising a blend of relaxation and scenic beauty. The highlight of the evening is the introduction to our motorbike, setting the stage for an exhilarating exploration of Pondicherry’s vibrant streets and serene beaches. This unique blend of spiritual tranquillity at Auroville and the colonial elegance of Pondicherry make this journey an unforgettable chapter in our expedition.

The third day of our journey marked the beginning of an exhilarating adventure on Motorbike, as we set off from the charming coastal town of Pondicherry towards the historic city of Thanjavur. Spanning approximately 180 KM, this route promised not only a test of endurance but also an intimate encounter with the diverse landscapes and cultural heritage that south India has to offer.

The journey to Thanjavur is not just a mere transition from one city to another; it is a passage through time and tradition. As we progressed, the road unfolded through verdant countryside, dotted with quaint villages, paddy fields, and palm groves, offering glimpses into the rural life that forms the backbone of Tamil Nadu.

This motorbike ride was not just a segment of our journey but a memorable experience that allowed us to immerse ourselves in the beauty and heritage of South India. It was a day of discovery, of camaraderie among fellow riders, and a testament to the spirit of adventure that drives us to explore the unexplored.

On the fourth day of our expedition, we start on a journey from Thanjavur to Madurai, covering a distance of approximately 185 km. Our day began with a sense of anticipation and excitement as we prepared to visit one of India’s architectural marvels, the Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Thanjavur. 

The Brihadeeswarar Temple, also known as the Big Temple, captivated us with its magnificent structures, intricate sculptures, and the towering vimana (temple tower), which stands as a symbol of the Chola dynasty’s architectural prowess. The serene and spiritual ambience of the temple offered us a moment of reflection and admiration for the rich cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu.

With our spirits enriched by the visit, we mounted our motorbikes, ready to ride towards Madurai, another gem in the crown of Tamil Nadu’s historical and cultural legacy. The journey was a blend of scenic beauty and rural charm, as we passed through lush landscapes, agricultural fields, and small villages, each telling a story of their own.

The fifth day of our adventure began with the warm Madurai sun peeking through our curtains, promising a day filled with awe and exploration. After a hearty breakfast, we set out to visit the crown jewel of Madurai – The Meenakshi Temple. This architectural marvel, steeped in history and devotion, left us spellbound with its intricate carvings, towering gopurams, and the vibrant life pulsating through its corridors. The temple’s spiritual aura was a profound reminder of India’s rich cultural tapestry.

The next leg of our journey took us on a scenic ride towards Kodaikanal, a serene hill station cradled in the Palani Hills. Spanning a distance of 115 KM, the road unwound through lush landscapes, offering glimpses of the countryside’s tranquil beauty. The ascent to Kodaikanal was a refreshing transition from the plains to the cool embrace of the hills. As we neared our destination, the air grew crisp, and the vistas of mist-covered valleys and cascading waterfalls welcomed us into the heart of nature’s splendour.

On the sixth day of our journey, we started on a captivating ride from Kodaikanal to Munnar, traversing 170 KM of landscapes that seemed to be painted by the very hand of nature. Leaving behind the serene beauty of Kodaikanal, with its misty mornings and tranquil waters, we set our sights on another gem of the Western Ghats – Munnar. This transition from one hill station to another was not just a location change, but a passage through diverse ecosystems, each with its unique charm and allure.

The road to Munnar wound through verdant valleys, tea plantations stretching as far as the eye could see, and rugged mountains veiled in a soft cloak of blue mist. The journey itself was a soothing balm to the soul, with each curve revealing a new vista more breathtaking than the last. The air, infused with the scent of eucalyptus and wildflowers, was a refreshing contrast to the city’s hustle and bustle we had left behind days ago.

This journey from Kodaikanal to Munnar was more than just a physical transition; it was a voyage through the heart of South India’s most enchanting landscapes. It reminded us of the enduring beauty of the natural world and the peace that can be found in its quiet corners. As we arrived in Munnar, the anticipation of exploring its renowned tea estates, exotic flora and fauna, and mesmerizing viewpoints filled us with excitement. This day marked not just another leg of our journey, but a chapter filled with awe-inspiring moments that would be etched in our memories forever.

The seventh day dawned in Munnar, enveloping us in a blanket of tranquillity and the fresh aroma of tea leaves. Our agenda for the day was to dive deep into the local culture and natural beauty of Munnar, with a special focus on its world-renowned tea plantations and factories. This day promised a blend of educational tours and scenic delights, offering us a chance to see, first-hand, the journey of tea from leaf to cup.

Our exploration began with a visit to one of Munnar’s expansive tea plantations. The sight of endless rows of tea bushes, set against the backdrop of misty mountains, was nothing short of spectacular. Walking through the plantation, we learned about the meticulous process of tea cultivation, the different types of tea, and the harvest cycle. The interaction with the plantation workers added a personal touch to our visit, as they shared their experiences and the intricacies of tea picking.

The highlight of the day was the guided tour of a tea factory. Here, we witnessed the transformation of raw tea leaves into the fragrant tea that graces our tables.

Our day in Munnar was not just about understanding the process of tea production but also appreciating the hard work and dedication behind every cup of tea we enjoy. It was a day that connected us more closely to the natural and cultural heritage of Munnar, allowing us to appreciate the beauty and bounty of this enchanting hill station.

We also visit the Mattupetty Dam before returning to the hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

On day eight, our adventure took us from the verdant expanses of Munnar to the vibrant heart of Thekkady, covering a distance of 100 KM. This leg of our journey promised an enriching experience as we rode through the aromatic Cardamom Hills, an area renowned for its spice plantations, before delving into the cultural depths of South India through its traditional performances.

The ride to Thekkady was a feast for the senses. The route snaked through lush landscapes, with the Cardamom Hills offering breathtaking views and the air filled with the heady scent of spices. It was a ride through the green heart of Kerala, showcasing the natural bounty and the agricultural heritage of the region.

Upon reaching Thekkady, our first stop was a local spice garden. This visit was an exploration of South India’s spice garden, where the air was rich with the fragrance of cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, and a myriad of other spices. Walking through the garden, we learned about the cultivation processes, the harvesting techniques, and the various uses of each spice, both in cuisine and in traditional medicine. The knowledge shared by the garden’s caretakers offered us a glimpse into the integral role these spices play in the local culture and economy.

The evening brought with it a cultural immersion into the art forms of Kerala. We had the privilege of witnessing a Kathakali performance, a classical dance-drama known for its elaborate costumes, intricate makeup, and expressive gestures. The stories told through Kathakali are deeply rooted in Hindu mythology, offering a captivating insight into the region’s spiritual and cultural traditions.

Following the Kathakali show, we were treated to a demonstration of Kalaripayattu, one of the oldest martial arts in the world.

As dawn broke on the ninth day of our sojourn, we geared up for the journey from Thekkady to Alleppey, a distance of 140 KM, eagerly anticipating the transition from the verdant wilderness to the serene backwaters. Alleppey, also known as Alappuzha, is famed for its labyrinthine network of waterways, lush landscapes, and the unique ecosystem of its backwaters, earning it the moniker “Venice of the East“.

Upon arrival, we checked into a riverside luxury cottage, which offered an immediate sense of peace and detachment from the world outside. The cottage, nestled on the banks of a gently flowing river, provided stunning views of the backwaters, surrounded by the lush greenery that Kerala is famous for.

The highlight of our stay in Alleppey was undoubtedly the backwater cruise. Boarding a traditional houseboat, we glided through the calm waters, passing by small villages, paddy fields, and coconut groves. This immersive experience offered us a glimpse into the lives of the local communities that thrive on the backwaters. The sight of children waving from the banks, fishermen casting their nets, and birds gliding over the water was a vivid reminder of the simple yet rich tapestry of life in Alleppey.

As the day turned into night, the sound of water lapping against the shores and the gentle rustling of palm leaves added to the magical atmosphere of Alleppey.

Our hearts are full of tranquil memories, we set forth towards Fort Kochi, a cosmopolitan amalgam of history, culture, and natural beauty. The journey from Alleppey to Fort Kochi, a quaint Portuguese settlement, promised a dive into the colonial past of this vibrant city.

After enjoying a delightful breakfast by the riverside, we Start on our ride to Kochi. The route offered a blend of scenic landscapes and bustling townships, showcasing the diversity of Kerala’s geography and its people. As we neared Fort Kochi, the architectural landscape began to transform, revealing the European influence that has shaped this area for centuries.

Fort Kochi, with its storied past and palpable historical charm, welcomed us into its narrow lanes lined with Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial architecture. Walking through these streets felt like stepping back in time, each building narrating tales of Kochi’s rich historical tapestry. The iconic Chinese fishing nets, silhouetted against the setting sun, provided a picturesque backdrop to the bustling fish markets, where the day’s fresh catch was artfully displayed.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at one of the waterfront cafes, savouring the local cuisine and reflecting on our journey from Alleppey to Kochi. This leg of our adventure highlighted the seamless blend of natural beauty and cultural richness that Kerala embodies, leaving us with enduring memories of the landscapes we traversed and the histories we encountered.

With a blend of gratitude and nostalgia, we prepared to explore Kochi’s rich cultural heritage on foot, delving into the historical and architectural wonders that define this vibrant city.

The eleventh day of our journey began with the warm sunlight filtering through the palm leaves, heralding another day of exploration in the vibrant city of Kochi. After a hearty breakfast infused with local flavours, we set out to delve deeper into the city’s historical and cultural heart, with the Santa Cruz Basilica, Mattancherry Palace, and Jew Town on our program.

Santa Cruz Basilica: A Beacon of Gothic Splendor

Our first stop was the Santa Cruz Basilica, one of the eight Basilicas in India, known for its breathtaking Gothic architecture and historical significance. As we stepped inside, the tranquillity of the basilica enveloped us, its ornate interiors adorned with beautiful paintings that depict scenes from Christ’s life, capturing our gaze and imagination. The basilica stands as a testament to the Portuguese influence in Kochi, offering a serene space for reflection amidst the hustle of the city.

Mattancherry Palace: A Glimpse into Kerala’s Royal Heritage

Next, we ventured to Mattancherry Palace, also known as the Dutch Palace, though it was originally built by the Portuguese as a gift to the Raja of Kochi. The palace’s simple exterior belies the rich tapestry of murals that adorn its walls, illustrating Hindu temple art, portraits, and exhibits of the Rajas of Kochi. Walking through the corridors of the palace, we were transported to a bygone era, gaining insights into the life and times of the royalty of Kerala.

Jew Town: A Melting Pot of Cultures and Traditions

Our exploration led us to Jew Town, a quaint quarter known for its antique shops, spice markets, and the historic Paradesi Synagogue. Wandering through the narrow streets, we were captivated by the scent of spices that filled the air, the vibrant colours of the shops, and the diverse cultural influences that have shaped this area. Jew Town is not just a place; it’s a living mosaic of Jewish, Arab, and European heritage, offering a unique glimpse into the multicultural fabric of Kochi.

The day spent exploring these historical and cultural landmarks of Kochi was enriching, offering us a deeper understanding of the city’s diverse heritage. From the Gothic beauty of the Santa Cruz Basilica to the regal history of Mattancherry Palace and the multicultural vibrancy of Jew Town, Kochi revealed its layers, each more captivating than the last.

As the day came to a close, we reflected on our experiences, grateful for the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the rich tapestry of history, culture, and tradition that Kochi embodies. This city, with its blend of colonial past and vibrant present, left an indelible mark on our hearts, making Day 11 a highlight of our journey.

Motorbike Mechanic. 

This indicates the presence of a mechanic who is knowledgeable about motorbikes and can provide assistance and maintenance throughout the expedition. They are responsible for addressing any mechanical issues or breakdowns that may occur during the journey.

A backup vehicle is provided to carry luggage. Participants can store their belongings in the backup vehicle, allowing them to ride their motorbikes without carrying heavy baggage.

First aid box 

These are safety provisions included in case of any medical emergencies during the Expedition. The first aid box contains basic medical supplies to address minor injuries or ailments.

Experienced English-speaking road captain.

The road captain is a knowledgeable and experienced individual who leads the tour. They are fluent in English and guide the participants throughout the journey, ensuring smooth navigation and addressing any concerns or questions along the way.

Royal Enfield.

This specifies the type of motorbike provided for the Expedition. The Royal Enfield is a popular model known for its reliability and suitability for adventure or off-road riding.

Fuel.

Fuel for the motorbikes is included in the expedition package. This ensures that participants have a sufficient fuel supply to cover the distances travelled during the Expedition.

  • Cost of any spare part which will be used due to the accidental damage incurred when the motorbike is in rider’s possession.

  • Security deposit per motorbike of £250. As per the deposit policy (This is refundable at the end of the expedition if there is no damage or spare parts used.)
  • Parking and monument entry fees during sightseeing.
  • Any cost incurred due to extension, change of itinerary due to natural calamities, roadblocks, vehicle breakdown, union issues and factors beyond our control (to be paid by the client directly on the spot)

  • Tipping for the mechanic, backup driver, and guide, a suggested range is between £50 and £200, depending on the quality of service provided.

Travel to India, you will need an e-visa. This process has been made simple and accessible through online applications. You can apply for your e-visa by visiting the official website at E-VISA. The application process is straightforward. One of the requirements for obtaining your e-visa is to provide the address of an Indian company during your application. This is part of the information needed to process your visa. It’s important to have all the required details and documents ready before you start your application to ensure a smooth process. Remember, applying for an e-visa is a crucial step in planning your trip to India, so it’s best to take care of it well in advance of your travel dates. This way, you can look forward to your trip without any last-minute hassles.

India’s e-Tourist Visa system offers three types of visas for travellers wishing to visit the country, catering to different durations and types of visits. Here’s a brief overview:

1. One Month e-Tourist Visa: This visa option is suitable for both group and individual tourists. For group tourists, it became available from October 15, 2021, and for individual tourists from November 15, 2021. The visa is valid for one month, or 30 days, allowing for a double entry. However, it is important to note that this visa cannot be extended or converted into another type.

2. One Year e-Tourist Visa: This visa is valid for one year, or 365 days, from the date of electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) grant. It permits multiple entries into India. This option is ideal for those who wish to make several trips to India over the course of a year without the need to reapply for a visa each time.

3. Five-Year e-Tourist Visa: For those planning longer-term travel or multiple visits over several years, the five-year e-Tourist Visa is the best option. Valid for five years from the date of the ETA grant, it also allows for multiple entries. An important condition for holders of the one-year and five-year e-Tourist Visas is that their total stay in India during any calendar year should not exceed 180 days.

These visa options provide flexibility for tourists according to their travel plans, making it easier to explore the rich cultural and historical heritage of India.

The customer receives a confirmation voucher via email within 24 hours of successful booking

In case the preferred slots are unavailable, an alternate schedule of the customer’s preference will be arranged and a new confirmation voucher will be sent via email.

Booking & payment conditions:

A deposit of 10% of the total cost of the Expedition is required at the time of booking.

The full payment (the remaining 90%) has to be done until 2 weeks before the start of the Expedition.

We require a minimum strength of 4 riders to operate one group with Backup.

If there are any additional expenses due to bad weather or any other reason beyond the control of the expedition operator on account of a hotel stay, transportation, meals, etc. extra bill will be raised.

Neither Motorbike Expeditions nor the participating partners/hotels will be responsible for the additional expenses.

Motorbike Expeditions is not responsible for any change in itinerary due to reasons beyond our control like changes in flight and train schedule, cancellation of flights/trains, political disturbances, natural phenomena, etc.

If any group member wants to leave the group in between the expedition then he/she has to pay the cost of transportation motorbike from the point of leaving the tour till the Main office drop.

Group members would have to get their own riding gear. Wearing a helmet, carrying a valid ID proof &  driving license is mandatory.

All guests will be responsible for the safety and security of their own luggage. We will not be at all responsible for the damaged/missing/lost luggage. So carry a small daypack bag to carry all the expensive things with you.

Compensation for any damage/accident done by you during an expedition to another property/person would be directly payable to you.

The advisable maximum size of baggage should not exceed 60 litres. Remember that you have to carry the luggage to the backup vehicle and into the accommodation
